When Lucy Kirkwood’s Chimerica launched at the Almeida Theatre in 2013, it was hailed as a dazzling survey of geopolitics and macroeconomics compressed into a five-act play. The historian and Sunday Times columnist Niall Ferguson’s coinage of “Chimerica” — a portmanteau of China and America — had already highlighted the global dominance and latent antipathy of the world’s two superpowers. A four-part adaptation of Lucy Kirkwood's Olivier Award-winning play of the same name, Chimerica is the channel's latest series to tackle some of the most urgent issues affecting society today. Political unrest included, of course.
