When Lucy Kirkwood’s Chimerica launched at the Almeida Theatre in 2013, it was hailed as a dazzling survey of geopolitics and macroeconomics compressed into a five-act play. The historian and Sunday Times columnist Niall Ferguson’s coinage of “Chimerica” — a portmanteau of China and America — had already highlighted the global dominance and latent antipathy of the world’s two superpowers.
